Hey bride-to-be!
We know the spotlight is (rightfully) on you for your big day, but let’s talk about your favorite people—the guests! Whether you're planning a tropical beach bash in Tulum or a romantic hacienda wedding in San Miguel de Allende, having respectful, enthusiastic, and well-prepared guests makes everything so much better.
So, if you’re attending a destination wedding in Mexico—or sending this post to your guest list as a subtle nudge—here are the top 10 golden rules for being the kind of guest every couple dreams of.
Oh, and before we dive in—if you’re still curating your dream vendor team in Mexico, check out our list of recommended wedding planners and vendors. You’ll thank us later.
1. RSVP ASAP
Seriously, don’t ghost the couple. If they asked you to RSVP by a certain date, do it early. Especially for destination weddings, every headcount matters—for booking transportation, hotel blocks, meals, and even ceremony chairs. Planning from afar is no joke!
2. Dress the Part (And Respect the Dress Code)
Mexico weddings are gorgeous and diverse. One day you might be on a cobblestone street in Oaxaca, the next barefoot on the beach in Holbox.
Whatever the vibe, follow the dress code listed on the invite. And please—unless the bride specifically says so—don’t wear white. Also: skip the stilettos on grass or sand (your ankles will thank you).

3. Be On Time—Or Better, Early
Destination weddings often involve shuttles, boat rides, or remote venues. So if the invite says 4:00 PM, that doesn't mean show up at 4:15 with a margarita in hand. Being punctual (especially to the ceremony!) shows respect for the couple and their timeline.
4. Don’t Be That Distraction
Silence your phone, don’t photobomb the vows, and if the couple has a no-photo policy—honor it! Let their photographer do the job (and trust us, if they hired someone like Daniel Matus, they’re in good hands).
5. Don’t Ask for a Plus One
We get it—you’d love to bring a friend or your new situationship. But if your invitation says “just you,” trust that the couple had to make tough decisions with their guest list and budget. Respect the invite and show up solo with a smile.

6. Respect the “No Kids” Policy
Destination weddings are often designed to be adult-only getaways. Unless the couple specifically invited your little ones, it’s best to arrange childcare. You’ll enjoy it more, and so will everyone else (including the bride trying to say her vows without Peppa Pig playing in the background).
7. Be Kind to Everyone
Destination weddings bring together family, friends, and sometimes total strangers across continents. Be warm, be social, be open-minded. Respect your table assignment, don’t hog the mic if there’s an open toast, and maybe go easy on the tequila shots during cocktail hour.

8. Bring a Thoughtful Gift (Even From Afar)
Not sure what to give? Go with something from their registry, or send a cash gift digitally. Many couples use wedding contributions toward their honeymoon—hello, dream cenote tour! You can also check in with a close friend or family member to see what might be meaningful.
9. Dance, Celebrate, Make Memories
This is what it’s all about! Celebrate with intention. Get on the dance floor, join the traditions, and if there’s a mariachi band—sing along. The energy guests bring can completely shape the wedding atmosphere. Make it magical for the couple!
10. Say Thank You
A kind word goes a long way. Thank the couple in person, send a message afterward, and show your appreciation for the unforgettable experience. Destination weddings are a huge labor of love—and your gratitude will mean the world.
Bonus Tip: If You’re a Bride, Send This Post to Your Guest List!
